How do I stop water from collecting on my roof?
Standing water damages roofs and buildings. Four ways to get it off the roof and into the drains.
Water collecting on a business roof can be a major problem. Its weight can damage the roof, any leaks can cause damp inside the building, and stagnant water attracts insects, encourages algae and shortens the roof's life. There are several ways to tackle it.
Direct more water to the drains
Commercial flat roofs are never completely flat, and low spots are where water tends to collect. Filling these low spots helps water reach the drainage system built into the roof.
Clean out the drains
Leaves, twigs, branches and general debris can clog roof drains so water backs up. Clearing them, for example by flushing with a jet wash or hose, solves the problem.
Add more drain lines
In areas with high rainfall, a roof may need more drain lines. A professional contractor can add new lines or widen existing ones so more water leaves the roof quickly.
Re-pitch the roof
Flat roofs need the right fall to drain correctly. If a roof is not pitched to the right level, re-pitching may be the only option, saving more expensive problems in future and helping the roof last much longer.
